Garden and Famine Museum |
| Strokestown Park was the family home of the Packenham Mahon
family from the 1600s untill 1979. The house retains virtually all of its
original furnishings.
The Famine Museum uses orignal documents and letters relating to the years of the famine on the Strokestown Park Estate to explain the history of the Great Irish Famine and to draw parallels with the occurrence of the famine throughout the developing world to-day. The 2ha walled pleasure garden was offically opened in 1997 having been faithfully restored to its original splendour with the assistance of an ERDF grant through the Great Gardens of Ireland Restoration Programme and a FAS scheme. Strokestown park is now owned since 1979 by the Westward Group, a company based in Strokestown, and its restoration is a measure of their Commitment to the preservation of our heritage. |
